PROBLEM: How do I check my UAB DPO e-mail?

  • Setting up an account in Outlook to POP your e-mail from our server.
User Services may be reached by phone Monday-Friday from 8 am until 5 pm at 934-3540.

SOLUTION:

 Open Outlook Click Tools/Accounts
Click Add/Mail
Type your name here.
Enter your email alias/BlazerID address. Aka Reply-To address
Enter the email servers:

Incoming: norm.dpo.uab.edu
*Outgoing: vera.dpo.uab.edu
    (* see note )
SMTP server (also known as outgoing or outbound mail server) is tricky because it depends upon where you are connected, and which ISP you use if you are not on campus. (* see note)
If you are on-campus, SMTP server should be set to vera.dpo.uab.edu
If you are off-campus, you should set the SMTP server to whatever is recommended by your ISP.
If you are off-campus and your ISP does not have a recommended SMTP server, then you can try using vera.dpo.uab.edu, but you may also have to do relay authorization in order to send mail to non-UAB addresses. https://chambord.dpo.uab.edu/relay-auth.html  relay authorization screen

*non-UAB addresses: If you are using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to access the network, they probably supply an SMTP server which you can use while connected through their service. The most convenient option is probably to change your e-mail software to use it when you are not on campus. You will, of course, need to contact your provider for more details on this. In some cases, however, it may make sense for you to continue using an SMTP server which is equally reachable whether you are on-campus or not. This is available, but not without an extra step to authorize your access when you are off-campus.
Also some ISP's (and getting to be most) block port 25 except to their own server (AOL comes to mind.)  Users of these cannot get to UAB for SMTP service; relay authorization/authentication on the web page does nothing.  You can see if they block SMTP by going to START/RUN and entering
telnet  vera.dpo.uab.edu  25
then click OK before you try to use UAB's SMTP service.  If you don't receive a line similar to this it's not reachable:
220 lilith2.dpo.uab.edu ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3/8.9.3; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 15:49:03 -0500
If you use one of the following ISPs try their SMTP server.

Road Runner smtp-server.bham.rr.com
BellSouth mail.bellsouth.net
mail.atl.bellsouth.net
mail.atl.bellsouth.net
MSN  smtp.email.msn.com
Charter  smtp.charter.net
Earthlink  smtp.earthlink.net
Telocity smtp.telocity.com
AOL Contact AOL

This is where you enter your alias/BlazerID
And its password. Example: myemail
Obvious! ;-)
Set your Default.

Highlight the account  you wish to be the default by clicking it [is should turn blue]
and then click Set as Default

To check your email, click the
Send/Receive button.
