PROBLEM: How do I find my E-mail Headers in Outlook?

User Services may ask you to send us your e-mail headers in order to solve one of the following problems with your Microsoft OUTLOOK e-mail:

  • You are having some kind of trouble with e-mail delivery.
  • You want to lodge a formal complaint about an e-mail message you received.

SOLUTION:

Open the e-mail message you want to tell us about

Under the menu word View, select Options

A window named Options opens.

Notice the section Internet Headers near the bottom. You will need to Cut and Paste the information found there.

  • Click your cursor inside the box, just to the left of the words Return-Path:

  • While holding your left mouse button, drag downward in order to highlight everything in this box. Drag downward at the bottom of the box, until you are sure you have reached the end (look at the slide control on the right side of the box - it should be all the way to the bottom.
  • Keeping your mouse inside the text you just highlighted, use your RIGHT mouse button to bring up the menu with the word COPY (or, use the key combination Control-X).

    Now click the Close button.

    Start a new e-mail message

    Click once inside the window where your message would go (Body of the message)

    Select Edit and then Paste (or, use the key combination Control-V).

    You should see the header text within the body of your e-mail message

    Address the message to UserServices@uab.edu

    Include any additional information about the nature of your problem in your e-mail message.
