PROBLEM:
What is the Microsoft Campus Agreement?
SOLUTION: The Microsoft Campus agreement has been signed by both UAB and Microsoft. UAB has provided lists of participating departments to ACL, the vendor who is our intermediary with Microsoft. You may recall, the Campus Agreement gives units the rights to run the licensed software for a 12-month period, and licenses all upgrades and downgrades of the software throughout the term of the agreement. At the end of the agreement, units may do one of the following, (i) renew the license, (ii) cancel out of the annual subscription model by purchasing upgrades,or (iii) remove the software from their machines. participating departments will be re-solicited next year (around June) to verify continuing participation and current FTE counts. Departments that have not signed up for this year (1999) will have the opportunity to do so next year. The agreement provides no media (CDs or diskettes) for software distribution. Departments may use any available currently owned media or purchase new CDs via UAB's current Microsoft Select agreement (contact Information Technology Services, Rick Pilgreen, phone 4-5489 or email: richard@uab.edu) or through any other legitimate source. ACL also has software CD's and documentation in stock for this purpose. The software can be loaded by department LAN managers or a central entity on campus such as Information Technology Services or the Cancer Center Technical Services Facility (contact Bob Duffett, phone 5-8240 or e-mail Bob.Duffett@ccc.uab.edu). Software may be loaded to multiple machines per FTE. Departments must maintain a signed release from faculty members or staff using software at home. The faculty and staff must agree to remove the software from their home PCs upon leaving UAB. UAB has no liability after that. (sample home agreement is attached.) Departments may load the software on lab PCs at no additional charge.
