PROBLEM: Using Eudora Light for Windows 98, 95 or NT, how do I set up multiple users on a single computer?

SOLUTION:

To allow multiple users to share a single computer:

  1. First, you must create a folder for each user. By default, Eudora creates mail in a folder named EUDORA. You need to create additional folders, one for each user. From the Desktop of the machine that will be shared:
    • double click My Computer,
    • double click (C:) or floppy drive if you are using a diskette
    • double click the folder named EUDORA
    • click File, New, Folder
    • assign a user name to newly created folder for each user. (Example: A:\Eudora\Joe, C:\EUDORA\JOE, C:\EUDORA\FRANK.)

  2. Click the START button and select EXPLORE. The explorer window will open.
    • Select Programs, then Eudora Lite. You will see a Eudora Lite shortcut in this folder.

  3. You now create one Eudora Lite shortcut for each user. To create additional shortcuts:
    • Click once (not twice) on the Eudora Light shortcut, so that it is highlighted. Select Edit, then Copy. Next select Edit, and then Paste.

  4. Next you will need to add some new information to the shortcuts.
    • Right click each shortcut, select Properties, and select the Shortcut page tab.
    • Where it says Target, type in, for example:
              C:\EUDORA\EUDORA.EXE C:\EUDORA\JOE

(Replace "JOE" with the username of the appropriate person. Make sure that the mailbox location) The first part tells the shortcut where to find the Eudora program. The second part tells the shortcut where to find the user's mailbox.
    • If your folder name happens to have a space in it, for example Joe's Mailbox rather than Joe, you must put quotation marks around the mailbox name in the shortcut, like this:
      C:\EUDORA\EUDORA.EXE "C:\JOE'S MAILBOX"
    • click OK
    • close the Properties window

  5. Rename each shortcut so you can tell to whom it belongs.
    • Right click each shortcut, select ReName.
    • You can name it "Joe's Email" or anything else you like.

  6. Double click on each user's mail icons and supply their information. Alternatively, a dialog box will open for each user the first time they click on their new mailbox shortcut.
    • Pop Account: (owner's real-host based email address)
    • Real Name: (the owner's name)
    • Return Address or Replyto Address: (owner's alias based email address)
    • Set the SMTP server to VERA.DPO.UAB.EDU
    • Set the PH server to NS.UAB.EDU

  7. It is helpful to move the user shortcuts someplace easy to find. You could drag them out onto the desktop, for instance.

  8. If you are using Windows 95/98 with User Profiles enabled, you should move these shortcuts to the appropriate directories. For instance, user JOE should have his shortcut in C:\Windows\Profiles\JOE\Start Menu (or C:\Windows\Profiles\JOE\Desktop).
