PROBLEM: Setting up Netscape Navigator for multiple users

If you want a single PC to be shared by multiple users for e-mail and web browsing, it is a good idea to keep each user's mail messages and bookmarks separate.

The mechanisms for doing so using Netscape vary according to the version you are using. The easiest configuration is done using Netscape Communicator version 4.X; earlier PC versions require that you edit the registry--"do not try this at home". If you are using an older version of Netscape and want shared usage, you might consider using Eudora for e-mail; Eudora is freeware and is very easy to configure for multiple users on both PC's and Mac's.

SOLUTION:

Netscape Communicator 4.X
Netscape Communicator 4.X allows you to set up multiple users on a single PC using command line options. To edit a command line option, open the Properties dialog of an icon or shortcut (place your mouse over the icon, and single click the RIGHT mouse button; select Properties) (on Windows 95 also click the Shortcut tab). On the Command or Target line you can add, following a blank space, an option such as -new_profile to have Communicator open by asking the user to create a new user profile. For example, the command line

    c:\communicator\program\netscape.exe -new_profile
would open a Netscape profile dialog. You will need one profile for each user.

Once multiple user profiles have been created, you should change the command line to

    c:\communicator\program\netscape.exe -profile_manager
Using this command line, Netscape will start up by presenting a list of user profiles - the user selects theirs and proceeds. More information about Netscape command line options (remember, version 4.X only) can be found below. You can put multiple options on a line.
