PROBLEM:
How do I use my AOL browser to delete a file on my DPO web site?
Internet Explorer 4.0 has a bug known as the Freiburg text-viewing bug, which could allow a malicious Web site to obtain the contents from a text, HTML, or a graphic image (no other file types) from a user's hard disk. That information could not be damaged or manipulated on the user's computer, but it could be viewed.
SOLUTION:
- Click on the Internet icon from the AOL Welcome or Channels window.
- On the Internet Connection window which appears, click on the Internet Extras button.
- Click on the FTP button.
- Click on the Go to FTP button.
- Click on the Other Site button.
- Type in www.dpo.uab.edu as the Site Address, and check the box for "Ask for login name and password".
Click on the Connect button.
- You will be asked for your user name (alias) and password. Type these in, and hit Enter. (This
alias and password will be the ones assigned to you by DPO, not by AOL.)
- You will be shown a list of files in your DPO disk space. One of these should be web, with a picture
of a folder next to it. Double-click on this line.
- You will be shown a list of the files in your web directory. Find the once you want to delete,
and click on it ONCE to highlight it. Then click on the Utilities button at the bottom.
- On the screen that follows, you will see the directory and file name - click on the Delete button.
A verification window will appear; click on OK to verify and remove the file. A window will pop up
confirming that the file has been deleted.
- Now, either select more files to delete, or close all the windows you have opened.
