The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery became the 24th academic department in the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine on Oct. 1, 2013, when the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System voted to elevate the UAB Division of Neurosurgery within the Department of Surgery to department status.
The department will celebrate that milestone throughout 2023. Under the leadership of James M. Markert, M.D., James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery, the department has announced the launch of the official platform that will showcase the 10th anniversary celebration.
Each month leading up to the official anniversary date in October, key stories that reflect the past 10 years will be featured on the UAB Neurosurgery 10-Year Anniversary Celebration webpage.
The department features 28 faculty members and has nearly $5 million in research funding. Neurosurgery physicians saw more than 20,000 adult patients last year, and nearly 4,000 pediatric patients.
