DNS stands for “Domain Name Service”.  The DNS protocol is used to translate human-friendly names like “mypc.education.uab.edu” to numbers that routers can understand as they deliver data across the Internet.

Management of IP numbers has been distributed to departmental network contacts.  These contacts also take care of assigning a friendly name to an IP number.
