My department pays for my BellSouth dial-in service; how do I start/stop service, change my password, or change my level of service?
If your service is paid by UAB Account number then your service is managed by UAB Telecommunications Services. Because UAB is paying for your service, any changes to your billing must be handled by UAB Telecommunications, not BellSouth. If you know your password and want to change it, you may do so from your BellSouth account management page. If you have forgotten your password, you must contact UAB Telecommunications Services to request a password reset.

To start/stop/change your university-paid BellSouth service, or to reset your forgotten password on this account, please contact Robbie Scott at isp@uab.edu. You may call the BellSouth help desk at 1-888-462-4452 for technical assistance.

What can I do with a BellSouth Internet account?
The BellSouth network allows you to get onto the Internet using a standard telephone line and a modem.

Does BellSouth Provide International Roaming?
The BellSouth network does *NOT* currently support access to the Internet when outside the U.S. This problem is in a state of on-going discussion between UAB and BellSouth

If my e-mail box is not located at DPO, can I still use the BellSouth service to read my e-mail?
Yes. You can use the BellSouth service to reach ANY POP e-mail account. This includes: Pegasus Mailboxes, Eudora Mailboxes, Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes, and GroupWise version 5.X Mailboxes.

Can I use the BellSouth service to open and edit files on my UAB departmental or office computer?
The answer to this question depends on your department's choice of equipment, as well as how your department network is configured and administered. Departments using the Novell or Microsoft NT operating systems, for example, may have the capability to permit users to access departmental computers remotely.

Why am I billed for using the 1-888 roaming number in Birmingham? Important note about 1-888 billing policy.
ATTENTION: Whenever you use the 1-888 number you will be billed 10 cents per minute, even for local calls. Use the local phone number when in the Birmingham area to avoid any additional charges. When traveling in the region, you can log in to the Member Services area of the BellSouth Internet Service site to look up local dialing numbers. Outside the region, visit the UUNET PoP Finder page. In particular, do not set up a laptop (for yourself or anyone else) with the 1-888 number as the sole option for connection.

How do I configure multiple dial-in setups for laptops with both network and modem cards?
Some users have experienced difficulties with routing when using a laptop which has both a network and a modem card used for UAB campus network access.

If the machine had a network card with a 138.26.X.X number, the proper route is added when dialing into DPO because you have added a direct route into that domain since DPO is on that net. When you dial into BellSouth, you get an equivalent route for their explicit net. What is happening is that your existing network card has a route to 138.26.0.0 and the system seems to be preserving that (properly, although one would wish for the route to be shutdown since the card is not functional).

You might take the approach of a second profile to use when disconnected from the UAB network (works for both NT 4.0 and Win9x). See Instructions for creating a second network profile. for further details.

What is PPP?
PPP stands for "Point-to-Point Protocol". It is an international standard for Internet-type (TCP/IP) dial-in networking. The BellSouth program can be used by any computer using dial-up software based on the PPP standard. This includes Windows 3.X machines with WINSOCK and modem software, Windows95/98, WindowsNT, Apple Macintosh computers using MAC/TCP or Open Transport.
