What is CISCnet?     Who is CISCnet?

The Campuswide Information Services Committee was created in 1995 as a part of the strategic planning process that same year. Its mission was to formulate and recommend to the UAB Executive Council a plan for the delivery of information and video services. The Networking Needs Subcommittee (CISCnet) was specifically charged with the overall review of the campus-wide network; recommendations for its support; network policies and procedures; and recommendations for network financing. Today, CISCnet continues to remain active in evaluating networking needs at UAB as well as serving as the Internet2 Project Committee and the Infrastructure and Core Services Committee for the IAIMS project. A summary of the various reports, recommendations, guidelines, policies, etc. that CISCnet has produced can be found on the CISCnet web site at: http://www.dpo.uab.edu/ciscnet/.

CISCnet’s membership, consisting of technical, academic and administrative positions from across the campus, provides expertise and advice in the following areas:

1) The campus physical infrastructure—The campus network backbone and building wiring, network hardware, servers, and computer workstations.

2) The campus virtual infrastructure—The software used to both run and maintain these systems along with the software used to ensure reliable and efficient collaborations both among UAB personnel and with their colleagues world-wide.

3) Support services—The primary core services that need to be available to all users to support their particular information system needs. This includes the provision of support personnel to maintain the physical plant along with the personnel required to provide training and technical support in the use of desktop systems and collaborative applications.
