LDAP Directory Service How to Use the LDAP Directory Service in your Outlook 98

Microsoft Outlook XP (2002) Microsoft Outlook 98/2002 - Internet Mail Edition Microsoft Outlook 98 - Corporate Edition Microsoft Outlook Express Netscape Mail Pegasus
Now that I've installed the LDAP Directory Service, how do I use it?

How to Use the LDAP Directory Service : Outlook 98

First, open a "New Mail Message".  You must have a message open to use the LDAP directory service.
Under the menu item Tools, select "Address Book"
When the Address Book opens, click on the Find button near the top.

A window will open entitled "Find People".

(a) Use the pull-down menu to select UAB Electronic PhoneBook

(b) Put the name you are searching for in the Name field.  In this example we are searching for a Jill whose last name starts with G.

  • Notice that you don't have to know the entire last name.

  • Notice that you could search by e-mail address instead to find the name of the person associated with a particular e-mail address.

    (c) Click the Find Now button.

  • The LDAP Service will present you with a list of possible matches. (Please note that you will not be supplied with more than 25 names at once, so a search for Smith will not show you all the possibilities--you must make your search more specific.)

    (a) Look at the list of names.  You see that 4 Jill's have been found:  two have last names beginning with G.  The other two are a duplicate listing for a Jill whose middle initial is G.

Suppose you aren't sure if it's Jill Gemmill or Jill Gilbert that you're looking for.

    (b) Click on the Properties button. The "Jill B Gemmill Properties" window opens.  Click on the tab labeled Business.By examining the department and title you can tell if this is the right Jill.

    (c) Notice that you can also add this information  to your address book. Click the
    To-> button.

The name you just selected will now appear in the Message Recipients box.

    Click the OK button.

You're back to the e-mail message, which now has an address in the To.. field.

Complete your message and Send, as usual.
