Start up Netscape (This example was created using Netscape Communicator 4.5 -- In the illustration to the right, the Netscape e-mail window is open; however, you can follow these directions directly from within your web browser without starting the e-mail).
Under the menu Item "Communicator", select Address Book

In the window named "Address Book", use the pull-down menu under the word "File" and select New Directory

In the window labeled "Directory Server Property" enter the following information:
- Description: UAB Electronic Phonebook (a)
- LDAP Server: ldap.uab.edu (b)
- Search root: o=uab.edu (c) - that's the letter "o" for "organization"
- Leave the port number at the default: 389 (d)
- Don't show more than: 25 (e)
- Leave these two boxes UNCHECKED (f)
- Click OK
UAB Hospital also has an LDAP server - repeat these instructions but
- Set the Description to UAB Hospital
- Set the LDAP Server to gw5.uabmc.edu
- Set Search Root to o=uab

You can change the order of your directory servers (which determines which list gets searched first) by dragging entries up and down in the list provided.

Under the Netscape menu item "Communicator", Select the menu item Messenger
|

Under the Menu "Edit", select Preferences
|
 |

In the window labeled "Preferences", Highlight the word Addressing under Mail and Newsgroups (a)
Place a check in the box "Directory Server" (b)
Verify that UAB Electronic Phonebook appears in the list of available directories (c)
Select the radio button "Show me a list of choices" (d)
Click the OK button.
