LDAP Directory Service Using the LDAP Directory Service with Netscape

Microsoft Outlook XP (2002) Microsoft Outlook 98/2000 - Internet Mail Edition Microsoft Outlook 98 - Corporate Edition Microsoft Outlook Express Netscape Mail Pegasus Macintosh Outlook
Now that I've installed the LDAP Directory Service, how do I use it?

How to Install the LDAP Directory Service : Netscape Messenger E-mail

  • Start up Netscape (This example was created using Netscape Communicator 4.5 -- In the illustration to the right, the Netscape e-mail window is open; however, you can follow these directions directly from within your web browser without starting the e-mail).

  • Under the menu Item "Communicator", select Address Book
  • In the window named "Address Book", use the pull-down menu under the word "File" and select New Directory
  • In the window labeled "Directory Server Property" enter the following information:
    1. Description: UAB Electronic Phonebook (a)
    2. LDAP Server: ldap.uab.edu (b)
    3. Search root: o=uab.edu (c) - that's the letter "o" for "organization"
    4. Leave the port number at the default: 389 (d)
    5. Don't show more than: 25 (e)
    6. Leave these two boxes UNCHECKED (f)
    7. Click OK
UAB Hospital also has an LDAP server - repeat these instructions but
    • Set the Description to UAB Hospital
    • Set the LDAP Server to gw5.uabmc.edu
    • Set Search Root to o=uab
  • You can change the order of your directory servers (which determines which list gets searched first) by dragging entries up and down in the list provided.
  •
  • Under the Netscape menu item "Communicator", Select the menu item Messenger
  • Under the Menu "Edit", select Preferences
  • In the window labeled "Preferences", Highlight the word Addressing under Mail and Newsgroups (a)

  • Place a check in the box "Directory Server" (b)

  • Verify that UAB Electronic Phonebook appears in the list of available directories (c)

  • Select the radio button "Show me a list of choices" (d)

  • Click the OK button.
